The History of the Future takes us on a visually and intellectually captivating journey through history, diverse cultures, and the landscape of the human mind. It focuses on psychedelic substances – from the sacred ayahuasca of Amazonian tribes to laboratory-studied DMT – as vessels for knowledge, transformation, and the potential evolution of human consciousness. The film begins in the distant past, during the Ice Age, when prehistoric humans entered altered states of consciousness as part of rituals of survival, initiation, and contact with invisible worlds. It continues through key moments in human history – from the Eleusinian Mysteries in ancient Greece, through spiritual traditions of India and sacred practices of ancient Egypt, to the rich shamanic cultures of North and South America, where psychedelic substances shaped religion, medicine, and collective identity. The film then shifts to the present day, where psychedelics are experiencing a dynamic renaissance. They are returning to clinical trials as promising treatment for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or addiction, yet they remain stigmatized and criminalized. This contradiction creates a tension which is examined by the documentary from the perspectives of science, ethics, politics, and culture."
