Olympia Part One: Festival of the Nations
Olympia 1. Teil - Fest der Völker / Leni Riefenstahlová; (prolog) Willy Zielke / German Empire 1938 / 126 min. / DCP
The footage of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin is renowned for its visually striking filmmaking techniques. However, behind the ancient beauty standards and international cooperation it masks a triumph of hard drill, and transforms the contestants into dehumanized representatives of races and nations. But some are still worth rooting for: the Afro-American athletes who defy the dehumanizing perspective.
