The Queen of Spades
Thorold Dickinson / United Kingdom 1949 / 96 min. / DCP

It is almost as if the ambitious 1949 adaptation of Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades was
haunted by one of the supernatural curses addressed in this famous story. An absolute
flop that was howled down at Cannes by the audience captivated by neorealism is now
regarded as a forgotten gem of British post-war cinema.
