The Wildcat (Music: Arash Ghasemi)
Die Bergkatze / Ernst Lubitsch / German Empire 1921 / 86 min. / DCP
Although, after The Oyster Princess and The Doll (1919), The Wildcat is the last of Lubitsch’s three brilliant satirical comedies, it goes much further in the eccentricity of its stylization and may well be considered his most visually experimental film. It is hard to say whether it failed in its own time because of its excessive style or because of its antimilitarist bite in the aftermath of a bitterly lost war, but 105 years later it remains a work full of mesmerizing ideas – and an enchanting heroine.
