Throne of Blood

Akira Kurosawa / Japan 1957 / 110 min. / 15 years / DCP
The film was shot as an adaptation of Shakespeare‘s drama Macbeth. Kurosawa transferred the plot from Scotland to medieval Japan and used elements of the Noh theatre for the adaptation. The universality of the existential drama about the irresistible desire for power and loss of the soul is emphasized by the contrast with principles of Buddhism.
