Yojimbo

The film was based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel Red Harvest, which takes place during the prohibition period in the USA. Kurosawa moves the story to the end of the Tokugawa dynasty’s reign (1868). A samurai comes to a nameless town and is about to use the war of two local clans led by a sake maker and a silk merchant cynically to his advantage.
