Dahomey
A wooden statue of King Ghezo assumes the role of a narrator in Mati Diop’s documentary. He articulates his feelings during the return journey to his homeland more than a century after he was captured by the French colonial troops in 1892. This critique of colonialism with a tinge of magical realism won the Golden Bear at Berlinale.
