Władysław Szpilman, a Polish pianist of Jewish descent, survived the Second World War almost against all odds. Though his whole family was deported, he miraculously managed to stay in Warsaw. He spent the rest of the war in the ruins of the city destroyed by bombing. He later wrote a memoir about his experience, filmed by Roman Polanski at the turn of the millennium.
